Engineering uses the hole basis system and shaft basis system to specify the tolerances and fits between mated parts, especially cylindrical pieces like shafts and holes.

The shaft’s dimensions can fluctuate within certain bounds in the hole basis system while the hole’s size and tolerances are maintained constant. The shaft is made to fit into the hole with a certain amount of clearance or interference; the hole is thought of as the fixed element. The shaft is made to fit within the tolerance zone for the hole, which is defined as a range of sizes above and below the nominal size.

The size and tolerances of the shaft are maintained constant in the shaft basis system, but the dimensions of the hole are flexible. The hole is made to fit the shaft with a certain amount of clearance or interference since the shaft is regarded as the fixed element. The hole is made to take the shaft within the tolerance zone, which is a range of diameters above and below the nominal size for the shaft.

Both systems are employed in various situations, and each has its benefits. The assembly’s intended use, the desired level of clearance or interference, the simplicity of production, and the unique design requirements are only a few examples of the elements that influence the choice between the hole basis system and the shaft basis system.
