ASTM D5452 test is used for gravimetric measurement of a particulate contaminant isolated by filtration from a sample of aviation turbine fuel. This test method helps to minimize the contaminants and also avoid filter plugging and other operational issues. However, a tolerable level of particulate contaminants has still not been identified for all points in fuel distribution systems but the total contaminant determination is usually of most concern.
For ASTM D5452, a known volume of fuel is filtered through a test membrane filter. The increase in membrane filter mass is calculated gravimetrically after washing and drying. Then, the change in weight of the control filter membrane located instantly below the test filter membrane is also calculated. The particulate contaminant is calculated from the increase in mass of the test membrane relative to the control membrane.
The total contaminant is calculated in milligrams per liter as follows:
W1 =Initial mass of the test filter membrane
W2 = Final mass of the test filter membrane
W3 = Initial mass of the control filter membrane
W4 =Final mass of the control filter membrane
