Drying or Curing During Film Formation of Organic Coatings ASTM D5895

ASTM D5895 is a set of two test methods that are used to evaluate the rate of dry-film formation of organic coatings. The methods are test method A (Straight Line Recorder) and test method B (Circular Recorder), and the results are reported as drying time.

    Scope:

    ASTM D5895 contains two methods that determine various stages and the rate of dry film formation of organic coatings. Test method A  uses a straight line type, and test method B uses a circular mechanical type drying-time recording instrument. The application of mechanical recorders is significant in comparing the drying behavior of organic coatings belonging to the same generic type. The drying times of such coating are important in determining when a coated article, freshly painted floor, room or stair is ready to be used.

    Test Procedure:

    In Test Method A (straight line recorder), the coating is applied to glass strips in  30025 mm (121 inches) thickness. The drying time recorder is instantly placed on the wet film and then the stylus is lowered onto the wet coating. The stylus is allowed to move across glass strips at a specified uniform speed. In Test Method B (Circular Recorder), the coating is applied to glass plates in 150150 mm (66 inches) thickness. The drying time recorder is instantly placed on the wet film and then the stylus is allowed to move in a 360° arc at a stated uniform speed.

    Results: 

    The end results are reported as drying time and other applicable parameters that deviated from the specified standards.
