    Scope:

    ASTM D5895 contains two methods that determine various stages and the rate of dry film formation of organic coatings. Test method A uses a straight line type, and test method B uses a circular mechanical type drying-time recording instrument. The application of mechanical recorders is significant in comparing the drying behavior of organic coatings belonging to the same generic type. The drying times of such coatings are important to determine when a coated article, freshly painted floor, room or stair is ready to be used.

    Test Procedure:

    ASTM D5895 consists of two test methods. In Test Method A (straight line recorder), a coating of 300×25 mm (12×1 inches) thickness is applied to glass strips. The drying time recorder is instantly placed on the wet film and then the stylus is lowered onto the wet coating. The stylus is allowed to move across the glass strips at a specified uniform speed.

    In Test Method B (Circular Recorder), a coating of 150×150 mm (6×6 inches) thickness is applied to the glass strips. The drying time recorder is instantly placed on the wet film and then the stylus is allowed to move in a 360° arc at a stated uniform speed.

    Results: 

    The end results are reported as drying time and other applicable parameters that deviated from the specified standards.

    Conclusion:
