Upon initial purchase by a consumer, every product carries an implicit assurance of structural and aesthetic integrity: that plastic housings will resist fracture on impact, coatings will remain adherent despite prolonged ultraviolet exposure, glass containers will withstand rapid thermal fluctuations, and surfaces will maintain their finish during abrasive cleaning. Such engineering considerations often remain imperceptible to the end user; however, the rigour of a testing program is often evidenced only by the absence of product failure. Conversely, inadequate testing protocols result in highly visible performance deficits.

Consumer goods testing represents the technical discipline essential to fulfilling these implicit performance mandates. It is a systematic and standardised methodology that facilitates the transition from prototype to a commercially viable product, ensuring both manufacturer accountability and consumer confidence.

    Our Consumer Goods Testing Services

Mechanical Testing for Plastic Consumer Products

Plastics are everywhere in consumer goods – from toy housings and kitchen appliances to luggage shells and sporting equipment. But not all plastics are equal, and a plastic’s mechanical properties determine whether it withstands real-world handling or fails in the customer’s hands. Getting tensile strength, impact resistance, flexural stiffness, and hardness data on your materials before production isn’t just due diligence – it’s how you avoid expensive field failures and warranty claims.

    Relevant ASTM Standards:

ASTM D638 – Standard test method for tensile testing of plastics. ASTM D638 determines the tensile properties of plastics using standardised dumbbell-shaped specimens, providing data on tensile strength, yield strength, modulus of elasticity, and elongation. This test remains one of the most useful in selecting suitable polymers for packaging, automotive, and industrial applications where reliability and safety are concerns. It ensures standardised, consistent evaluation to support material design, process optimisation, and quality control.

ASTM D256 – Standard test method for Izod impact resistance of plastics, measuring the energy required to break a notched specimen when struck by a swinging pendulum. Critical for qualifying plastic enclosures, handles, toys, and housings where drop resistance and impact toughness determine product survival in real-world use.

ASTM D790 – Standard test methods for flexural properties of plastics and electrical insulating materials, measuring flexural strength and flexural modulus under three-point bending loads. Flexural data is essential for designing rigid-plastic consumer product components that carry structural loads without deflecting or breaking during use.

ASTM D648 – Standard test method for deflection temperature of plastics under load (Heat Deflection Temperature, HDT). The test determines the temperature at which a plastic specimen deforms by a specified amount under a defined bending stress, providing meaningful information regarding the material’s thermal resistance and load-carrying capacity at elevated temperatures. This test helps manufacturers and designers evaluate the heat resistance, dimensional stability, and mechanical performance of plastic materials under service conditions.

    Shore Hardness Testing

Consumer product feel matters. The firmness of a grip, the give of a gasket, the resistance of a surface to indentation – all of these are controlled by hardness, and all of them affect how a customer perceives quality. Shore hardness testing is the standard method for quantifying this property across the full range of rubbers, elastomers, and plastics used in consumer goods.

    Relevant ASTM Standards:

ASTM D2240 – Standard test method for rubber and plastic Shore Durometer Hardness testing. The test method is utilised to evaluate Durometer Hardness (Shore A for soft elastomers and rubbers, Shore D for hard plastics) of polymeric and plastic materials. The Shore Hardness value is used as a quality control parameter for polymers, elastomers, plastics, and rubbers used in various applications, including seals, gaskets, footwear, automotive components, and consumer products. Shore hardness testing helps verify material consistency, ensure compliance with product specifications, and evaluate elasticity and stiffness, which are critical for product performance and durability.

    Scratch & Mar Resistance Testing

In consumer goods, appearance is performance. A smartphone back panel that scratches on the first day, a kitchen appliance coating that shows every wipe, a furniture surface that mars from routine contact – these are product failures that customers notice immediately and remember permanently. Scratch and mar resistance testing gives you a quantitative, reproducible way to specify and verify surface durability before a product ships.

    Relevant ASTM Standards:

ASTM D7027 – Standard test method for evaluating the scratch resistance of polymeric coatings and plastic surfaces using a standardised spherical-tipped stylus under a progressive normal force. The method quantifies scratch visibility, surface deformation, and damage onset thresholds, providing critical data for consumer products, automotive interiors, and durable goods. Understanding scratch behaviour is essential for material selection and coating development in applications where appearance retention and surface durability are key performance requirements. Key outputs include the critical normal force at which scratching becomes visible, the scratch width and depth as functions of applied force, and the surface recovery behaviour.

    Coating Impact Resistance Testing

Consumer goods coatings – on appliances, furniture, housings, and decorative metalwork – need to survive handling, installation, and everyday knocks without cracking, flaking, or delaminating. Impact resistance testing verifies that your coating system has sufficient flexibility and adhesion to remain intact when it matters.

    Relevant ASTM Standards:

ASTM D2794 – Standard test method for resistance of organic coatings to the effects of rapid deformation (impact). This test provides a method for determining the effect of sudden deformation by rapidly deforming a coating film and its substrate. The number of inch-pounds or kilogram-meters necessary to produce cracking defines the coating’s impact resistance. The method is widely used to assess how coatings respond to sudden mechanical stresses encountered during fabrication, handling, installation, or service life.

Accelerated UV Weathering & Durability Testing

Consumer goods that are used outdoors – garden furniture, sporting equipment, automotive accessories, signage, building products – face relentless UV radiation, moisture, and temperature cycling that degrade colours, crack surfaces, and embrittle plastics over time. Accelerated weathering testing compresses years of outdoor exposure into weeks of controlled laboratory testing, revealing how your product will actually age before it’s too late to change the specification.

    Relevant ASTM Standards:

ASTM G154 – Standard practice for operating fluorescent ultraviolet lamp apparatus for UV exposure of nonmetallic materials. QUV accelerated weathering tests simulate the adverse consequences of long-term environmental exposure of materials and coatings. The test replicates outdoor weathering in the laboratory under controlled conditions to predict material durability and service life. Changes in physical properties such as haze, colour, gloss, and impact strength are reported following defined UV exposure cycles.

ASTM D4329 – Standard practice for fluorescent UV exposure of plastics, specifying UV-B 313 lamp cycles for accelerated degradation testing of plastic consumer products exposed to outdoor UV environments – providing comparative durability data for material selection and product qualification.

ASTM D4587 – Standard practice for fluorescent UV condensation exposures of paint and related coatings, used for consumer-goods coating systems where the combined effects of UV exposure and moisture cycling must be characterised to predict durability.

Mold & Mildew Resistance Testing for Interior Surfaces

Consumer goods used in humid environments – bathroom fittings, kitchen surfaces, interior paints, wall coverings – need to resist mold and mildew growth. Mold growth on consumer products is not just an aesthetic problem; in some applications, it’s a health and safety concern. Accelerated mold resistance testing verifies your coating or surface treatment actually inhibits fungal growth under realistic conditions.

    Relevant ASTM Standards:

ASTM D3273 – Standard test method for resistance to growth of mold on the surface of interior coatings in an environmental chamber. The test evaluates fungal defacement of coating surfaces under accelerated conditions, establishing the relative resistance of paint films and surface coatings to mold and mildew growth under optimal conditions. Panels are rated each week for four weeks for mold growth on a 0-10 scale, using photographic standards specified by ASTM D3274.

Glass Container Thermal Shock Resistance Testing

Glass containers for food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics face one of the most demanding thermal challenges in consumer goods – sudden transition from dishwasher to refrigerator, from hot-fill production lines to cold distribution. A glass container that can’t handle those temperature swings is a liability, as it can shatter in a customer’s hand. Thermal shock testing is how glass container manufacturers verify their products can handle the temperature extremes their contents demand.

    Relevant ASTM Standards:

ASTM C149 – Standard test method for thermal shock resistance of glass containers, determining the relative thermal shock resistance of commercial glass containers (bottles and jars) that must withstand sudden temperature changes during service. The test simulates real-world temperature variations by subjecting glass packaging to sudden temperature shifts from hot to cold water. The specification assesses resistance to thermal shock using a variety of test methods, including simple pass-or-fail tests, progressive tests, and high-level thermal shock tests – applicable to glass containers for food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, and consumer products.

Water Absorption Testing for Plastic Components

When a plastic consumer product absorbs moisture – from humidity, washing, or prolonged contact with liquids – it can swell dimensionally, lose mechanical strength, change colour, and reduce electrical insulation performance. Water absorption testing tells you how much your plastic material absorbs and how that absorption affects its properties, so that you can select the right material for the right application.

    Relevant ASTM Standards:

ASTM D570 – Standard test method for water absorption of plastics, measuring the percentage increase in weight of a plastic specimen after immersion in water under defined conditions. Essential for qualifying plastics used in dishwasher-safe consumer products, bathroom accessories, outdoor applications, and any product exposed to humid or wet environments throughout its service life.

    Coating Density Testing

Getting the density of a liquid coating right is more important than it might seem. Density affects application viscosity, film build, coverage rate, and batch consistency – the difference between a coating that applies uniformly and one that runs, sags, or leaves gaps can come down to density deviation between batches.

    Relevant ASTM Standards:

ASTM D1475 – Standard test method for density of liquid coatings, inks, and related products. ASTM D1475 specifies the density of liquid coatings, inks, and related derivatives in their fluid form, providing quality control data for manufacturers and users of liquid coatings that require consistent viscosity and optimal product performance. This standard is particularly applicable for products requiring high accuracy, such as those used in critical applications or where precise coating thickness is crucial.

Chemical Resistance Testing for Consumer Plastics

Consumer products are exposed to cleaning agents, solvents, personal care products, food acids, and household chemicals throughout their service life. A plastic housing that discolours when exposed to disinfectant wipes, a coating that blisters when it comes into contact with moisturiser, a storage container that softens when it comes into contact with cooking oil – these are chemical compatibility failures that rigorous testing catches before the product reaches the consumer.

    Relevant ASTM Standards:

ASTM D543 – Standard practices for evaluating the resistance of plastics to chemical reagents, assessing dimensional change, mass change, and mechanical property retention after controlled immersion in specified chemicals. Essential for qualifying plastics and coatings used in consumer goods exposed to household cleaners, personal care formulations, and food contact environments.

    Why Consumer Goods Testing Matters

Consumer expectations have never been higher, and the consequences of product failures have never been more immediate – social media makes a single high-profile failure visible to millions of potential customers almost instantly. Testing isn’t just about regulatory compliance; it’s about protecting brand reputation, reducing warranty costs, and building the kind of product quality record that earns repeat business.

Getting the right tests done at the right stage of product development – material selection, prototype validation, pre-production qualification, and ongoing production monitoring – is what separates consumer goods brands that grow from ones that constantly firefight field complaints.
