Structural Insulation of A-Class Divisions Constructed of Steel ASTM F2877

The ASTM F2877 method is specific for evaluating insulation installed on structural aluminum or steel divisions, as defined in IMO resolution A.754 (18), to ensure that the insulation does not deteriorate in the event of a shock. The values are stated in inch-pound units.


    ASTM F2877 is crucial to define and measure the response of the products, materials, or assemblies to flame and heat in controlled conditions. The non-combustible passive fire safety insulation installed meets the best degree of commercial fire resistance expected. Mainly this test method is beneficial to assess the ability of a non-flammable passive fire protection system installed on structural divisions on industrial ships to feature after shock loading.

    Test Procedure:

    In ASTM F2877, an unshocked test and the shocking test specimens are examined for fire resistance following the shock testing. Both shocked and unshocked test specimens are installed side-by-side in a fixture and fire tested simultaneously. The fire resistance for each sample is measured and recorded.

    Specimen Size : 

    The maximum temperature rise of the thermocouple at the shocking fire test specimen should not be more significant than 180°C.


    The fire test report consists of all information relevant to the test details as specified in IMO Resolution, and the fire test laboratory personnel write it.
