Scope:

The ASTM C1249 explains how to use silicone sealants for the secondary seal of IG units that are glazed into SSG systems. The other important components of the IG unit edge seal, component compatibility, durability, and quality assurance are also discussed.

Procedure:

In ASTM C1249, the two panes of glass in an insulated glass IG sealed unit are separated by a spacer frame constructed of tube or foam spacer. By using the main sealant, the spacer frame to the two glass panes was secured. On two to four sides of the frame, a spacer tube was filled with desiccant and then placed to the back of the spacer to seal the unit. To boost the thermal efficiency, insulated glass sealed units can also be gas filled.

The tensile sealant stress can be calculated by using the following equation:

Specimen size:

The specimen should be conditioned at a temperature of ±20 and ±60 ^oC.
