    Scope:

    ASTM E53 test for the chemical analysis of copper is primarily used for compliance with compositional specifications.

    Procedure

    In ASTM E53, the copper is electrolytically deposited and weighed on a tarred platinum cathode after the sample is dissolved in an acid combination. Atomic absorption spectroscopy is used to determine how much copper is left in the electrolyte.

    Specimen size:

    300 mL of H2SO4 to 750 mL of H2O and 210 mL of HNO3 are used in the test method.

    Result

    In ASTM E53, the weight of deposited copper is calculated as follows:

    Copper =A-B

    Where:

    A = weight of cathode plus deposited copper and

    B = weight of the cathode
