Spectrophotometry for Color Assessment ASTM C1510

ASTM C1510 captures, specifies, and evaluates the accuracy of the colors in ceramic glasswares without affecting their composition. The color measurements are taken by checking the level of spectral reflectance of the given material using the spectrophotometer. The spectrophotometric scale can obtain optical density (O.D.) or absorbance units (Au) and % transmittance.


    Color parameters obtained by ASTM C1510 are helpful to every industry where the specificity and accuracy of the colors is the priority. By measuring the absorbance, the concentration of the colors can be assessed. ASTM C1510 has many applications precisely in the ceramics industry due to its effective detection of color coordinates and display of the data numerically. It defines all the properties of the color under observation. The importance of spectrophotometry in the whitewares industry is enormous as it is susceptible to analyzing and evaluating ceramics color.

    Test Procedure:

    The sample is kept in the spectrophotometer, and the lid is closed. Then it is turned ON to set to typical values, i.e., 380 nm absorbance wavelength and 0% transmittance. A lamp acts as the source of light. When the light falls on the sample, the diffraction grating in the spectrophotometer is rotated. The detector measures the transmittance and the absorbance of the model and displays it on its screen.


    The value of the molar absorption coefficient is measured using the equation Є=A/l where Є is the molar absorption coefficient (M-1cm-1), A is absorbance (A), and l is the sample length (cm).
