ASTM C675 Alkali Resistance of Ceramic Decorations

The ASTM C675 test technique determines the alkali resistance of ceramic labels on returnable beverage glass containers in order to assure the label’s required durability. This test is used for ensuring end product durability by material science laboratories, material processing companies, and other product manufacturers.... Read More

    Scope:

The ASTM C675 test technique is used to determine the alkali resistance of ceramic labels (also known as ACL (Applied Color Label)) on returnable beverage bottles in order to verify that the labels are long-lasting. The rapid test ensures that the ACL can withstand the specified number of washings while preserving its identity and appearance. The ASTM C675 standard for glass and ceramics assists material science laboratories, material processing companies, and product manufacturers in ensuring good quality and workmanship in their fabrication and treatment techniques.

    Test Procedure:

For ASTM C675, the test ware is placed in the alkali solution for 2 hours after the alkali solution has reached an equilibrium temperature (88°C ± 1°C). After 2 hours, the test ware is removed, then rinsed, wiped, and dried. Decoration removal is observed. After recording observation of the attack, the same procedure is repeated until the decoration is 90% removed. The endpoint of the 90% destruction test is when there is only enough label left for bare identification. The ACL must withstand a test period of 3-4 hours. The result is recorded as hours to 90% destruction.

    Specimen Size :

The ASTM C675 test specimen should have a good application (with the bottoms removed).

    Data:

This test method is qualitative since it determines the time necessary for any ACL exposed to an alkali solution to be 90% destroyed by eye inspection.

    Conclusion:

The ASTM C675 test technique is used to determine the alkali resistance of ceramic labels (also known as ACL (Applied Color Label)) on returnable beverage bottles in order to verify that the labels are long-lasting.
