The ASTM D5379 test method  is used to determine shear strain, shear stress, and shear modulus of plastic material. This test procedure deals with the shear properties of composite materials reinforced by high-modulus fibers. The composite materials may be continuous-fiber or discontinuous-fiber-reinforced type composites. The information can be used for study and development purposes concerning interply strength or composite material contrast.

    Test Procedure:

A notched beam sample is mounted in a shear fixture for ASTM D5379 test. Strain gauges can be applied to both sides of the sample. This is done to ensure that shear and twisting do not occur but failure must occur by shear. A load is applied at a particular rate until the sample breaks down.

    Specimen size:

The test samples are 76 X 11 mm at composite thickness with a V notch above and below the 11 mm dimension.
