What Is ASTM D5996 Online Ion Chromatography Water?

ASTM D5996, Standard Test Method for Measuring Anionic Contaminants in High-Purity Water by On-Line Ion Chromatography, is a Committee D19 on Water standard covering the on-line analysis of high-purity water by the ion chromatography technique. Its final edition is D5996-16, revised as D5996-05 (2009). ASTM withdrew the standard in 2025 with no replacement, so it’s now a historical reference method rather than an active specification. The method determines acetate, formate, chloride, fluoride, phosphate, nitrate, and sulfate in a continuously flowing sample and applies to anionic contaminants typically in the range of 0.01 to 100 µg/L. Rather than relying on discrete grab samples, the procedure draws a stream from the process line into an ion chromatograph connected at the sampling point. An ion-exchange column separates the anions. A conductivity detector measures them, and concentrations are quantified against calibration standards. Because the analysis happens at the sampling point, the standard notes that on-line measurement offers greater protection through frequent monitoring and early detection of contaminant ingress. It also acknowledges practical limits. Low-level work is vulnerable to contamination, anions can adsorb onto sample line walls, high-concentration peaks can mask neighboring peaks, and ammonia-treated water can produce low breakthrough volumes. Where volatile amines are used to control pH, samples are taken from the effluent of a rinsed strong acid cation exchange column to remove the high-pH interference. Continuous on-line sampling doesn’t lend itself to collaborative studies, so the test method wasn’t based on one. Users should verify performance in their own systems.

Applications and Benefits of ASTM D5996 Online Ion Chromatography Water Testing

    Scope

ASTM D5996 describes using ion chromatography to analyze high-purity water for trace-level anionic impurities. The method:

    • ASTM D5996 covers on-line analysis of high-purity water by the ion chromatography technique.
    • Seven anions are targeted: acetate, formate, chloride, fluoride, phosphate, nitrate, and sulfate.
    • Applicable to anionic contaminants typically in the range of 0.01 to 100 µg/L.
    • Samples are continuously flowing streams, not discrete bottled aliquots.
    • Detection relies on conductivity measurement following chromatographic separation of the anions.
    • Interferences are addressed too, including contamination, adsorption on sample line walls, and peak masking by high-concentration analytes.
    • When volatile amines control process pH, it recommends sampling from the effluent of a rinsed strong acid cation exchange column.
    • Because on-line analysis does not lend itself to such studies, the text states that it was not based on collaborative study results.
    • Developed under ASTM Committee D19 on Water, and issued in SI units.
    • D5996-16 is withdrawn with no replacement, so any current use should be documented as a method based on the withdrawn standard.

    Applications

    • Monitoring anionic impurities in the power-generation cycle and steam water, where chloride and sulfate ingress is a corrosion concern.
    • Ultrapure water systems used in semiconductor manufacturing for qualification and monitoring.
    • Early detection of contaminant ingress from condenser leaks, resin exhaustion, or makeup water changes.
    • Organic acid anions such as acetate and formate in high-purity water loops get tracked as well.
    • Legacy method documentation, audits, and comparison studies at facilities that adopted D5996 procedures.
    • Benchmarking online instrument readings against laboratory ion chromatography results.

    Benefits

    • Frequent measurement at the sampling point lets contaminant ingress be noticed sooner than periodic grab sampling does.
    • One chromatographic run quantifies several anions at once.
    • Trace-level capability suits waters where even small anionic concentrations matter.
    • Less manual handling with continuous sampling, and less of the contamination risk that comes with it.
    • Quantitation rests on conductivity detection after separation, which is well-established and widely understood.
    • Because interferences and sampling guidance are documented, users can plan realistic method verification.

    Our ASTM D5996 Testing Procedure

    Sample Injection & Concentration

A water sample is injected, and anions are trapped on an ion-exchange resin column.

    1

    Elution & Ion Separation

The eluent flushes the anions separated in the analytical column.

    2

    Suppression & Detection

Eluent cations are exchanged, and a conductivity detector measures separated anions.

    3

    Quantification

Peak areas or heights are compared with calibration standards.

ASTM D5996 Test Parameters and Requirements

    ParameterDetails
    Applicable MaterialsHigh-purity water
    Detection Range0.01–100 μg/L
    Temperature Control±0.5°C
    Detection MethodConductivity
Measured AnalytesAcetate, formate, chloride, fluoride, phosphate, nitrate, sulphate
    • Online Ion Chromatograph – Straight from the flowing sample stream, it separates and quantifies anions.
    • Anion-Exchange Column – Before detection, it resolves acetate, formate, fluoride, chloride, nitrate, phosphate, and sulfate.
    • Conductivity Detector – The response of each separated anion is measured for quantitation.
    • Suppressor Device – Lowers eluent background conductivity so analyte signals are easier to detect, as is typical in suppressed ion chromatography.
    • Strong Acid Cation Exchange Column – Amine-treated samples are conditioned here to remove high-pH interference before analysis.
    • Low-Contamination Sample Lines and Calibration Standards – These maintain sample integrity and anchor the calibration at trace levels.

ASTM D5996 Online Ion Chromatography Water FAQs

It allows the manufacturer to maintain quality water standards by identifying the trace anions in the water that could affect the production process, the quality of the products, or adherence to regulations—particularly where sensitive industries are concerned.

Essential equipment includes an ion chromatograph with a non-metallic or corrosion-resistant eluant and sample pump, an anion suppressor device, a low dead-volume conductivity cell, and a conductivity detector with temperature compensation.

Samples were injected into the ion chromatograph via a continuous flow system. Anions were concentrated, separated, and detected there with a conductivity detector after converting to acid form.

This technique can detect general anionic contaminants at concentrations as low as 0.01-100 μg/L, but accuracy relies on the purity of the reagent water used for standards.

The anion suppressor device exchanges cations from the eluent with hydrogen ions, which change anions to acid forms and hence increase their detectability in the conductivity cell.
