Short Beam Shear Testing ASTM D2344

Short beam shear testing for interlaminar parallel fibers is performed by ASTM D2344 test method. Different types of parallel fiber-reinforced plastics and composite materials are tested to obtain useful data.


    The short beam shear test by ASTM D2344 is used to determine the interlaminar shear strength of parallel fibers. This test is helpful for different types of parallel fiber-reinforced plastics as well as composites. The data obtained is useful regarding interply strength and can also be used for the comparison of composite materials. This test has certain limitations as it can be used for only continuous or discontinuous fiber-reinforced polymer composites. 

    Test Procedure:

    Initially, the width and thickness of the test sample are determined before conditioning for the ASTM D2344 test. The samples are placed on a horizontal shear test fixture where fibers are parallel to the loading nose. Then, the loading nose is used to flex the sample at a pace of 50 cm/min. After that, the force is recorded. Finally, shear strength calculations are carried out.

    Specimen size:

    The test samples are machined from flat, finished composites and then used.
