What is Rotational Edge Drop Integrity Testing?

The impact resistance of goods or packages that have been subjected to rotating edge drops is assessed during rotational edge drop integrity testing. To evaluate structural integrity, pinpoint flaws, and enhance durabili ty, it replicates situations that might actually occur in real life. This testing ensures dependable performance in a variety of circumstances and assists in improving product design.... Read More

Rotational edge drop testing covers the integrity of unitized loads and large shipping cases and crates. Rotational edge drop integrity testing, in particular, assesses how well the internal contents withstand rough treatment.

As an ISTA and ISO 17025 certified lab, Infinita lab realizes the importance of rotational edge drop testing. Meeting drop testing compliance requirements can be difficult. We are aware of the difficulties and help businesses through them. Thus, Infinita lab’s proven process helps avoid product launch delays.

Why is Rotational Edge Drop Testing Important?

Damages to products observed during testing strongly correlate with damages observed in the existing distribution system. Rotational edge drop testing and other impact tests allow the user to determine the integrity and stability of the load. The test offers recommendations for enhancing shipping container design.

During distribution, product and package damage can result in high replacement costs. A harsh distribution system also results in a decline in sales, lost customer loyalty, and constant interruptions and delays. Many of these costs may be significantly reduced or eliminated with the proper testing and certification.

Package testing will ensure packaging integrity throughout transportation to mitigate risks. When correctly performing package integrity compliance testing, benefits will include:

  • Cost-effective distribution
  • Assurance in the product launch
  • Improved client satisfaction
  • Growing market share
  • Shortened time from product to market
  • Decreased damages and product loss

Rotational Edge Drop Compliance Testing Procedures

The rotational edge drop test is completed using a measuring device, a support block, and a flat rigid surface such as concrete or steel. The support block is 3.5 to 4.0 inches in height and width. The support block must be at least eight inches longer than the longest package dimension to be supported.

To perform the test, one of the edges of the product is placed on the support block. The other edge has been raised nine inches. Then, it is released quickly to allow it to free fall to the ground. The test standard calls for multiple drops of the product on certain sides.

The rotational drop edge test is not feasible if, while the product is in a specific orientation, it topples before a side or edge can be raised to the necessary support or drop height. The Amazon SIOC test standard testing considers this test a shock test.

After the completion of the test, a report is written with the following information. This list isn’t meant to be comprehensive.

  • Condition of the test item(s) after the test
  • The test’s date, time, and the engineer’s name
  • An explanation of the test’s instrumentation
  • A summary of the information
  • A description of the test procedures, including the drop’s angle and height.
  • Dimensions of the case, crate, or unitized load
