Flexible Package Integrity Testing

Flexible packaging materials must be tested for compliance to assess their integrity and sterility. This is done using simulated environmental threats in flexible package integrity testing. This type of testing also aids in identifying dangerous substances that could seep through the flexible packaging. Examples of flexible packaging include paper, foil, plastic pouches, and single-use pharmaceuticals.

The benefits of flexible packaging include lower packing costs, convenience, and extended shelf life. However, an insufficiently packaged product can result in product loss, a decrease in sales, and damaged consumer loyalty.

Two common flexible packaging test standards are ASTM F1929 for leak detection and ASTM F2096 for gross leaks. ASTM D3078 assesses headspace gas losses from flexible packages, whereas ASTM F2054 examines the minimum burst strength of seals applied around the perimeter of a flexible package. Finally, ASTM F2095 measures nonporous flexible packages for leaks.
