Seal Strength Integrity Testing

Seal Strength Integrity Testing is a method used to assess the strength of seals between flexible and rigid materials. Seal strength is important to ensure a product’s integrity and opening force. Medical device packaging often requires seal testing to guarantee that it can maintain sterility and protect against harsh environmental conditions. ASTM F88 provides a standard for testing seal strength in flexible barrier materials.

The test is done at 23°C and 50% relative humidity and usually requires a 40-hour conditioning period. Three techniques are used in seal strength tests: Technique A, B, and C. Each technique has different grips and support placements. A tensile testing machine measures the tensile load and grip separation. The maximum seal force, or the force needed to separate the test material, is also considered. The test report includes the material being tested, the tools used, testing conditions, and any relevant details that could influence the results.

Seal Strength Integrity Testing is an essential element of package integrity and product quality. By testing the strength of seals, manufacturers can guarantee the safety and reliability of their products.
