ASTM D6037 Dry Abrasion Mar Resistance of Glass Coating

Scope:

These test methods allow you to estimate the resistance of high gloss coatings to mar damage such as, high glass coatings on cars, toys and other items prone to damage to their appearances.

Test Procedure:

The two methods in ASTM D6037 follows:

Test method A

The 20° gloss is measured with a calibrated gloss meter. The gloss is further measured within the abraded area at 4 positions. The test panel is placed on the turntable with the abraded side facing up. A soft brush is used to remove the residue from the specimen after abrasion. The abraded gloss is determined.

Test method B:

The test specimen is set and placed on the apparatus. A new abrasive paper is attached to the wheel’s circumference. The apparatus is set to perform ten double strokes for 10 strokes. The abraded gloss is calculated, and results are determined.

Test Specimen:

Specimens must be a disc or a square plate with a 6.5 mm hole in the center. 

Data

Results are obtained by calculating the grand mean of the mean values obtained for each panel used to test a specific coating.

Conclusion:  

ASTM D6037 method is used to determine the relative mar resistance of high gloss coatings.
