Delrin Material Properties Offer Strong, Versatile Plastic Alternative to Metal

Delrin: What is it?

Delrin acetal homopolymer (polyoxymethylene POM) is a widely used plastic that can be easily machined and molded.

Delrin plastic is a great metal substitute because of its high tensile strength, low friction, good wear resistance, resistance to creep and warp, and general toughness. Delrin is chemically resistant to hydrocarbons, solvents, and neutral chemicals, and it has a high density with a low moisture absorption rate.

Delrin Plastic Is Superior For Use In Manufacturing

Delrin is a versatile material with excellent mechanical and industrial qualities. Particularly suited are pump and valve parts that are constantly exposed to moisture. Gears, bearings, bushings, rollers, fittings, and electrical insulator components are a few more common applications.

The benefits of delrin:

  • Sufficient stability in dimensions
  • Highly machineable.
  • High resilience to both shock and creep
  • Able to withstand tiredness for long periods of time
  • Excellent rigidity and tensile strength
  • Resistance to oils, gasoline, and other chemicals
  • Because of Delrin’s low moisture absorption, it can be used in damp settings without compromising its performance or size.
  • For many wear applications, Delrin is the material of choice due to its low coefficient of friction and strong, robust surface.
  • Conforms to natural standards set by the FDA, NSF, and USDA

Both this data sheet and the Delrin 570 data sheet have charts detailing the material’s physical, mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties, all of which should be taken into account.

Opus KSD, a company we’ve worked with recently, utilized Delrin for prototypes of its SubQ It! surgical equipment, while Bog Street LLC, a company we’ve also worked with, used Delrin for its LEAP series of guitar picks.

Delrin injection molding, the material and plastic qualities of Delrin, and how Delrin’s density makes it a superb alternative to metal are all topics our knowledgeable staff is happy to discuss with you.
