Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) Testing Services

Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) is a persistent chemical that can linger in the environment for extended periods. It is a common ingredient in non-stick cookware and coatings that resist stains. Determining whether it exists in the materials used to make various items is crucial. 

Using a variety of equipment, including a High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatograph (GC), Mass Spectrometer (MS), or Titration (also known as Titrimetry), PFOA testing is a procedure used to detect the presence of Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA). The most well-known, precise technique is HPLC, a component separation tool. of a sample to identify their presence.

HPLC uses mobile and stationary phases to divide a sample’s constituent parts and identify their presence. The mobile phase is a liquid, typically an aqueous solution, and the stationary phase is a solid, like silica or alumina. The sample is then passed through the stationary phase, which separates the components according to their chemical properties. The components are then identified and a chromatogram is produced, which is a graph that displays the presence of PFOA in the sample.

  • Identifying the presence of PFOA in food and beverages.
  • Identifying the presence of PFOA in materials used in the production and process of consumer products such as cookware and stain-resistant coatings.

Advantages of Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) Testing

  • Accurate and sensitive detection of very low levels of PFOA. 
  • It is a non-destructive test,  which means the sample is not altered or destroyed during the procedure. 

Limitations of Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) Testing 

  • Test results are reported in parts per million (ppm) or parts per billion (ppb), making it difficult to interpret them accurately. 
  • The testing process is limited to estimating the presence of PFOA in ppm/ppb, not the exact amount present.

  • Cosmetics manufacturing 
  • Environmental agencies should monitor the presence of PFOA in water sources.
