Method to understand DeMattia Flex Cracking Tester and Flexing Test Technique

The testing technique is outlined by ISO 132*, and it centers on flexing-based fatigue testing. A material’s properties are said to change due to extended exposure to strain and stress in the case of fatigue. In this situation, fatigue explicitly refers to modifications brought on by numerous cycles of deformation. It is a dynamic test that is run over several iterations. Although fatigue may also include stress relaxation and creep, the fatigue brought on by cyclic deformation is the main concern in this article. In fatigue tests, the loading-unloading process is frequently used. But it’s crucial to understand that while tiredness has a wider range and can include other phenomena like stress relaxation and creep, for the sake of this discussion, it primarily relates to the effects of repeated stress.

Repeated deformation cycles, which affect mechanical strength and stiffness in items like belts and shoes, are taken into account during the fatigue testing of rubber materials. Variables including geometry, environment, and applied force affect material breakdown. In fatigue testing, elements such as heat deterioration, ozone assault, and oxidation are considered. DeMattia tests put materials through continuous flexing to gauge how long they can withstand crack occurrence and advancement.

The DeMattia Flex Cracking Tester has adjustable heads with grips for gripping specimens, movable grips that can move up to 100 mm, and the capacity to flex numerous specimens at once. There are guidelines for specimen preparation, including size and shape. The testing method for creating cracks through bending or cutting adheres to ASTM regulations. Performance variations when compared to the Ross Flexer machine are evident. The test highlights features of heat buildup in urethane materials, highlighting the significance of taking heat dissipation into account for enhanced performance and longevity.

Benefits of the DeMattia Flex Cracking Tester include the ability to test multiple specimens simultaneously, fully automatic testing with clear instructions, easy measurement of crack width, provision of S-N curves and test component results, simple setup of test pieces, and suitability for a variety of materials and industries, including automotive, rubber, and textile. Longevity, usability, and the capacity to improve many household objects are all prioritised in its design.
