ASTM D7637-10 Determination of Glycerin Assay by Titration

ASTM D7637-10 test method determines the glycerin quantity by titration with Sodium Meta Periodate. This test method can be applied for all glycerin or glycerin/water mixtures ˃75%. This method includes the cold oxidation of glycerol in the acidic medium. The final results of this test method are expressed in SI units.

    Scope:

    ASTM D7637-10 test method determines the glycerol content by means of titration with sodium hydroxide solution in a strongly acidic medium. As a result of the oxidation of glycerol with Sodium Meta Periodate, formaldehyde and formic acid are produced. Formic acid is essential for the determination of glycerol in various solutions. The information obtained through this method can be utilized in specifying standards for performance evaluation and safety of multiple solutions. 

    Procedure:

    The sodium periodate solution is measured, poured in a volumetric flask, and diluted. The required glycerin is taken in a flask and diluted with water. The solution is allowed to sit for some time. Then hydrochloric acid solution, potassium iodide solution, water, and starch solution are added. The solution is then titrated with sodium thiosulfate until the endpoint is reached. The glycerol assay is determined by titrating the diluted glycerin and bromothymol blue indicator with sulfuric acid.

    Specimen size:

    The specimen must be taken as per the requirements. 10 mL of the Sodium Periodate solution is used for this test. 

    Data:

    The glycerol content is expressed as percentage.
