ASTM D6041 Specification for Contact-Molded Fiberglass

Scope:

In ASTM D6041 requirements of materials, characteristics, design, construction, dimensions, tolerances, and appearance for pipe and fitting are covered. This specification is useful in construction of commercial-grade polyester resin pipe and fittings formed by contact molding in pressures up to 150 psi. 

Test Procedure:

ASTM D6041 test is performed at 70–77 °F (21–25 °C) in the laboratory. The resin’s chemical resistance, glass content, and laminate tensile strength must be determined. Hydraulic failure in a short period must be established. The pipe can be tested at room temperature of 50–80 °F (10–25 °C). Physical properties were also determined as needed.

Test Specimen:

The pipe should be 16 mm thick, and the length should not vary more than ±2 in.

t = (P*ID)/(2*S – P)

where t, P, ID, and S is the thickness (mm), design pressure (kPa), inside diameter of the pipe (mm), and allowable stress (not to exceed 1⁄6 of the design basis, kPa).

Conclusion:  

ASTM D6041 covers corrosion-resistant fiberglass pipe and fittings that have been contact-molded.
