ASTM A709/A709M-21 Specification for Structural Steel for Bridges
ASTM A709/A709M-21 test method determines the carbon and high-strength low-alloy steel structural shapes, plates, and bars, quenched and tempered alloy steel, and stainless steel for structural plates intended for use in bridges. Scope:
ASTM A709/A709M-21 test method covers operations including decoiling, leveling or straightening, hot-forming or cold-forming, cutting to length, testing, inspection, conditioning, heat treatment, packaging, marking, loading for shipment, and certification. The results obtained from this method help in quality control, research, and performance evaluation of structural steel. The use of steel for constructing bridges and buildings is specified.
Procedure:
The specimen is manufactured as per the specified measurements, and limits are specified for the chemical composition of the material. The analysis is done in accordance with the agreement between the purchaser and the producer. Tensile strength is measured, and heat treatment is applied. The impact testing and atmospheric corrosion resistance test are performed. The method also covers the packaging, marking, and certification.
Specimen Size:
Specimen size should be as per the requirements. In this case, the specimen having tensile strength such as (Grades 50 {345}, 50S {345S}, 50W {345W}, and HPS 50W {HPS 345W}) is used.

The method covers the certification, sampling, testing, and inspection of the specimen within the set limits.
