Adhesives are substances that form a bond between the surfaces of two materials or between a material and the adhesive itself. The adhesive tensile strength test is a quantitative method that evaluates the coating strength of the adhesive.
The test is important to determine the operational capabilities of a product which is bonded by adhesives. The adhesive tensile strength test analyses two types of bonding: the bonding between two rigid surfaces and the bonding between a flexible and rigid surface.
The test is performed by gripping the two specimens which are adhesively bonded and pulling them apart at a constant rate until either the specimen or the adhesive fails. Common adhesive failures are caused either due to cohesion, adhesion, or a combination of both.
There are many international testing standards for the tensile testing of adhesive bonds. Some of them include ASTM D897, ASTM D3762, and ISO 8547.
