    Scope:

    ASTM D5800 is highly significant in terms of determining evaporation loss of lubricating oils particularly of engine lubrication. Evaporation may contribute to oil consumption in an engine and can lead to a change in the properties of oil.

    Procedure:

    The sample in the ASTM D5800 test procedures is placed in an evaporation crucible flask. The sample is heated to 250 °C with a constant flow of air drawn through it. The loss in mass of the oil is determined. It is confirmed through multiple laboratories that procedure A & B, and C & D results in equal precision.

    Specimen detail:

    The specimen temperature measuring device shall have an accuracy of 0.5 °C, or better, and a resolution of 0.1 °C, or better.
