Test Method for Geotextile Deterioration as per ASTM D4355

A common test procedure for the degradation of geotextiles caused by exposure to light, moisture, and heat in a xenon arc type apparatus is ASTM D4355. It is intended to cause property changes by exposing the samples to xenon arc radiation, moisture, and heat (end use conditions).

In reality, when subjected to these kinds of conditions, polymers’ mechanical, electrical, and optical characteristics can change dramatically. The exposure employed in this technique is not meant to simulate the deterioration brought on by localized weather, such as atmospheric pollution, biological attack, and salt water exposure. In order to create a degradation curve, the specimens are put through a cut or ravel strip tensile test after each exposure interval. The latter enables the user to ascertain a geotextile material’s propensity to degrade when exposed to various elements such as heat, water, and sunlight. You want to think about ASTM D5894 for UV exposure and salt water.

The operating parameters and sample characteristics are described in Table 01.

The details of the equipment’s working circumstances are given below:

  • Irradiance level at 340 nm is 0.35 W/(m2 nm). kept constant at 0.02 W/(m2 nm)
  • 90 minutes of pure light exposure at a temperature of 65 3oC (149 5 oF) temperature of an uninsulated black panel; 30 minutes of light with water spray
  • 50 to 10% relative humidity (During light exposure only)
  • Please specify the lamp filter (Daylight, Window Glass, or Extended UV)
