Measurement of Residual Stress Management, analysis of Fatigue, and Beneficial Redistribution

Engineering characteristics of materials and structural elements, such as fatigue life, dimensional stability, corrosion resistance, etc., can be strongly impacted by residual stress. Such consequences typically result in significant costs for parts, equipment, and structure repairs and restoration. Reliability estimation of structural elements under actual service conditions and the design of structural elements must both include the residual stress analysis as a necessary step.

Although there has been some advancement in the approaches for residual stress management, more work remains to be done in order to create technology for the advantageous redistribution of residual stressors as well as efficient and affordable ways of residual stress analysis.

There are numerous strategies for dealing with residual stress:

  • Heat Treatment: To eliminate residual stresses, controlled heating and cooling techniques like as annealing or stress relief are used. These mechanisms aid in the redistribution and relaxation of the material’s internal tensions.
  • Mechanical techniques such as shot peening, laser peening, or mechanical stretching can induce compressive stresses into the material that offset the tensile residual stresses.
  • Machining and grinding: By using proper machining and grinding procedures, residual stresses can be reduced during the manufacturing process.
  • Material Selection and Design: Choosing materials with comparable thermal characteristics and implementing appropriate design strategies can aid in the reduction of residual stress development.
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA): FEA is used to simulate and predict residual stress buildup during production or operational situations. It aids in the optimisation of processes in order to decrease undesired residual stresses.
