PLASTICS SPECIFIC

Plastics are widely used in the manufacturing of many products in various industries. The properties of plastics are essential to ensure the safety, function, and performance of products. Rigid and thermoset plastics are two types of plastics used in many applications and must be properly tested to determine their properties and suitability for use.

Video 01: Plastic Analysis

A testing laboratory specialized in plastics can provide physical and analytical testing services for rigid and thermoset materials. This includes sample preparation and specimen molding (injection and compression), material characterization, dynamic testing, and more. Specific tests that may be conducted include CIE Lab Color Analysis, Coefficient of Friction, Cold Mandrel Bend, Compression Molding, Compressive Properties of Rigid Plastic, Environmental Stress Cracking, Flexural Modulus, Grinding of Plastics & TPE Materials, Hardness, Heat Deflection Temperature, Impact Testing, Injection Mold Shrinkage, Injection Molding of Plastics & TPEs, Instrumented Impact, Melt Flow Rate, Tear Properties of Plastic, Tensile Properties of Plastic, Vicat Softening Point, and Volatile Loss Using Activated Carbons.

In addition to testing, a specialized plastics testing laboratory can also provide guidance for the selection and validation of plastic materials. This includes determining the best material for the application, ensuring that the materials meet the necessary specifications, and conducting tests to verify the performance of the material. Standard tests, such as Cold Mandrel Bend, Standard Test Methods for Mandrel Bend Test of Attached Organic Coatings (ASTM D 522), and Standard Practice for Conditioning Plastics for Testing (ASTM D 618), can be performed to ensure the quality of the plastics. For specific materials, like Nylon Type 6 and Nylon Type 6 Copolymer, material specifications like FORD ESF-M4D101-A and FORD ESF-M4D423-A, respectively, can be used to verify the quality of the material. For resin testing, Honda HES D2500 (2010) provides general test methods for resin materials.
