Penetration Firestop System Fire Tests as per ASTM E814

ASTM E814 evaluates the performance of a firestop system using a time-temperature fire test and a hose stream test. To be listed by the UL, the firestop system must pass both tests. Some building codes may require equal F and T ratings.

The time-temperature fire test measures how long the firestop system can keep the fire from spreading to the non-fireside of the test setup. The test is finished when the flame is on the non-fireside. Each fire fighting system is given two ratings:

  • The F rating measures the occurrence of flames on the exposed surface of the firestop system by rounding down to the last completed hour.
  • The T rating is the amount of time it takes for the temperature of the non-fireside surface to rise more than 325 degrees Fahrenheit above its starting point.

ASTM E814’s second phase is the hose stream test. It determines the system’s resistance to an external force and integrity after fire heat exposure, as it is critical for the firestop system to function properly in harsh conditions.

ASTM E814 should be used in conjunction with other tests that assess other factors for a comprehensive fire risk assessment. Among these tests are the following:

  • E2226 is used in hose stream applications.
  • E176 is the fire terminology standard.
  • E119 for building construction material fire tests
