OXYGEN TRANSMISSION RATE (OTR)

To help our customers forecast and quantify the amount of oxygen that will penetrate the packaging over a specific period of time, LOG conducts OTR testing on its barrier products. For this, LOG is adhering to industry standards that outline how to conduct OTR testing for several applications, including rigid plastic packaging and plastic films, sheets, and laminates.

The following are the phases of packaging testing for OTR:

  • The package is put in a preset setting.
  • Pure nitrogen (N2) gas is used to cleanse the packaging. The oxygen content is measured by a coulometric sensor after the N2 drives the package’s already-present gas contents, including oxygen, down an outlet tube.
  • The test result is displayed as the amount of oxygen that permeates through each packet each day.

Conclusion:

The measurement of the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) is an important method for evaluating the barrier properties of packaging materials used in food, pharmaceutical, and other industries. The test involves measuring the rate at which oxygen permeates through a material over a specific period of time under controlled conditions. The OTR value provides information on the material’s ability to protect the packaged product from oxidation and spoilage caused by oxygen exposure.
