ISO 180

ISO 180 is a standard that specifies the requirements and testing methods for measuring the impact strength of plastic materials. The test is used to determine how well a plastic material can resist impact or shock, which is an important factor in many applications, including automotive parts, packaging materials, and consumer goods.

The ISO 180 test involves striking a sample of plastic material with a pendulum hammer of a known weight and height and then measuring the energy required to break the sample. The test is conducted at different temperatures to determine the material’s impact strength over a range of conditions. The results of the test are reported as the energy required to break the sample, measured in Joules.

There are two variations of the ISO 180 test: the Izod impact test and the Charpy impact test. The Izod test involves striking the sample at a fixed distance from one end, while the Charpy test involves striking the sample at the center.

ISO 180 testing is an important tool for determining the quality and performance of plastic materials. The test results can be used to evaluate the suitability of a material for a specific application and to compare different materials for their impact strength. Manufacturers use these tests to ensure that their products meet the required specifications and to identify areas for improvement in the design and production process.
