HYDROCARBON CONTENT

Hydrocarbon Content refers to the amount of polymers and other substances present in a formulation. It is calculated by subtracting the non-polymer components from 100%. Depending on the reconstructed formulation, the content can be adjusted to account for any minor abnormalities in test results due to certain polymers, not accounted for in ASTM test specifications.

The Rubber Hydrocarbon Content can be tested through a custom method. The Total Hydrocarbon Content can be measured through the Standard Test Methods for Rubber Products-Chemical Analysis, as specified in ASTM D297, Item 11. This method is used to accurately determine the amount of polymers and other substances in a formulation. It incorporates adjustments to account for any minor abnormalities in test results due to certain polymers, not accounted for in ASTM test specifications.

In addition, the Total Hydrocarbon Content can also be determined by taking into consideration sulfur containing accelerators, non-extractable resins, polymeric fiber content, sulfur levels in carbon black, or when certain polymers are ashed at high temperatures that may generate a small amount of soot, measured as carbon black. This process helps to more accurately describe the formulation as compounded and allows for a more precise measurement of Hydrocarbon Content.
