ASTM D903 Peel & Stripping Strength Testing for Adhesive Bonds

ASTM D903 describes the test to determine comparative peel or stripping strength properties of adhesive bonds, using standard specimens under specified pretreatment and test conditions. It is a 180° peel test using a flexible adhesive. The ASTM D903 peel strength is expressed as kilograms per millimeter of width.

    Overview

ASTM D903 is a standard method for determining the stripping strength (peel strength) of adhesive bonds. These adhesive bonds form between a rigid substrate and a flexible material, such as tape or film. In this method, the rigid substrate and flexible materials are pulled apart at a constant speed, and the angle between them determines the required separation force. It is used to assess the strength, adhesive performance, and durability of materials such as laminates and tapes.

The ASTM D903 test method covers adhesive bond strength. It applies to standard-sized adhesive-bond specimens, under pre-treatment, temperature, and testing-machine-speed specifications that determine their peel or stripping properties.

    Scope, Applications, and Benefits

    Scope

    ASTM D903 evaluates:

    • 180° peel strength of flexible-to-rigid adhesive bonds
    • Mean and peak peel force (N/mm or lbf/in)
    • Failure mode (adhesive, cohesive, or substrate failure)
    • Effect of substrate, adhesive type, and cure conditions on peel strength

    Applications

    • It is helpful to evaluate adhesive strength under peel loading conditions.
    • Differentiate adhesive formulations based on chemical composition.
    • It helps identify adhesives with superior bond strength.
    • For the research and development of adhesive bond strength

    Benefits

    • Effective in determining the effect of bond line thickness on adhesive strength.
    • Supports quality control by ensuring consistency and reliability of bonded products.
    • Assists in material selection for applications where peel forces are critical
    • Facilitates research and development by validating improvements in adhesive formulations.
    • Enhances product durability and safety in industries relying on adhesive bonding.
    • Applicable across a wide range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, packaging, construction, and electronics

    Testing Process

    Specimen Preparation

Long, narrow flexible strips are bonded to rigid substrates. Surfaces are adequately prepared, adhesive is applied, and specimens are cured in accordance with the specified instructions.

    1

    Mounting & Alignment

The rigid substrate is clamped vertically in the testing machine to ensure uniform peeling

    2

    Controlled Tensile Loading

A constant peel rate is applied by the testing machine, generating a tensile force that generally acts on the adhesive bond.

    3

    Data Acquisition & Fracture

Peel force is continuously recorded during peeling. The average load is calculated, and the results are used to evaluate peel strength

    Frequently Asked Questions

To perform a test for ASTM D903, the adhesive materials must be cut into specimens 1" x 12" long. The specimens are then peeled away from either a flexible or rigid substrate at a 180° angle at a separation rate of 152.4 mm/min, or 6in/min.

The ASTM D1002 test method is one of the most common methods for determining the bond strength of adhesives when tested on a single-lap-joint specimen on a metal-to-metal bonded test panel.

ISO 11339 uses a T-peel test to measure the comparative peel properties of adhesive bonds between flexible adherents.

ASTM D903 can be used to test a variety of adhesive bonds, including those between metals, plastics, rubber, and paper.

ASTM D903 uses a 180° peel angle with one rigid substrate, measuring the force to peel a flexible material from a rigid support. ASTM D1876 (T-peel) uses two flexible adherends peeled in opposite directions (approximately 90° each), providing a different peel geometry applicable to flexible-to-flexible bonds.
