ASTM D6740 Silanes Used in Rubber Formulations: Residue on Ignition

The ASTM D6740 test method determines the properties of silanes, especially those used in rubber formulations. The silan es such as those of triethoxysilylpropyl sulfane or their admixtures and solid carriers are studied by determining their residue on ignition. The final results are expressed in SI units.... Scope:

The ASTM D6740 test method is important in determining the residue on the ignition of various silanes. This helps identify the silicon content of the silanes and plays a role in their composition. This way, the application and commercial use of the silanes is specified. Their reliability and strength are determined, which further aids in better production of various products. Moreover, quality control and research can also be done with the help of the results obtained from this method.

    Procedure:

The ASTM D6740 test apparatus is set up and silane is homogenized by adding 2cm3 of Sulfuric acid. It is placed in a Simon-Mueller Oven, and the acid is evaporated. The ash color specifies if it requires more heat or not. The desired ash is removed and allowed to cool. For admixtures of silanes,  hydrochloric acid is added to 1g silane. The mixture is heated in a muffle furnace at about 1000°C. The amount of specimen that is left on ignition is considered to be the residue on ignition and is stated as per the percentage of the initial mass.

    Specimen Size:

For the ASTM D6740 test, the specimen is taken as per the requirements. About 1g of liquid silane is taken for the performance of this test method.

    Data:

The residue on the ignition to the nearest 0.01 % can be calculated as follows:

    Residue on ignition =(C-A)B-A × 100

    Where:

A = mass of crucible and silica glass wool, g,

B = mass of crucible, silica glass wool plus the sample, g,

C = mass of crucible, silica glass wool plus the residue on ignition, g.

    Conclusion:

The ASTM D6740 test method determines the properties of silanes, especially those used in rubber formulations.
