    Scope:

    Mill process variables, as well as the grade, thickness, and width of the material provided, all influence sheet flatness. The ASTM A1030 measuring methods give common definitions and procedures for flatness properties to buyers and suppliers. Other ASTM Committees and other standards-writing bodies may utilize this approach to measure the flatness properties of metal sheet products.

    Procedure:

    In ASTM A1030, by using a ruler, tape measure, tapered gauge, or step block gauge, height (H) at the peak point of each wave from a recognized flat surface with a cut sheet sample, or sheet area still attached to a coil, of at least 4 ft [1.2 m] in length by coil width; is measured. The cycle length (L) of each wave from peak to peak is measured with a ruler or tape measure.

    Sample size:

    The ASTM A1030 test employs a sheet area attached to a coil with a coil width of at least 4 ft [1.2 m] lying on a defined flat surface.

    The sample steepness index value is defined as follows:

    % steepness = S = (H/ L) × 100

    Conclusion:

    ASTM A1030 includes the definitions and processes for measuring the flatness of uncoated steel sheets, nonmetallic steel sheets, and metallic steel sheets. Quantitative restrictions are not addressed; instead, they are set in the general requirements or individual product specifications as agreed upon by the supplier and the user.
