What Is ASTM D903?

ASTM D903 — Standard Test Method for Peel or Stripping Strength of Adhesive Bonds — measures the peel strength of adhesive bonds between a flexible adherend and a rigid substrate by peeling the flexible material away at a defined angle (typically 180°) at a constant rate. It provides a quantitative measure of adhesion quality — the force per unit width required to separate the bonded assembly through progressive peeling.

ASTM D903 is one of the fundamental adhesive testing standards used across the packaging, automotive, electronics, and construction industries wherever adhesive bonds between flexible and rigid materials must be characterised and qualified.

Specimen Preparation

The standard specimen consists of a 25 mm (1 inch) wide strip of flexible adherend (film, foil, fabric, or coated sheet) bonded to a rigid substrate (metal panel, rigid plastic, glass) with the adhesive being evaluated. The bonded assembly is cut or trimmed to ensure uniform bond width. An un-bonded tab is left at one end for gripping.

Specimens are conditioned at 23°C ± 2°C and 50% ± 5% RH for minimum 24 hours before testing.

Test Machine Setup

The rigid substrate end is fixed to the base of a tensile testing machine. The free (unbonded) tab of the flexible adherend is gripped by the moving crosshead. The flexible adherend is bent back at 180° over the rigid substrate — the crosshead pulls the flexible adherend away from the substrate at a constant rate of 152 mm/min (6 in/min).

Data Collection and Reporting

Force versus displacement is recorded continuously throughout the peel. The average peel force over the steady-state region (excluding the initial peak from joint disturbance) is calculated. Peel strength is reported as:

Peel Strength (N/mm or lbf/in) = Average Force / Bond Width

Failure mode — adhesive (at adhesive-substrate interface), cohesive (within the adhesive layer), or substrate failure — is documented alongside the peel strength value.

Factors Affecting ASTM D903 Peel Strength Results

Peel angle: 180° peel requires maximum energy to bend the flexible adherend back on itself — producing different values than 90° or T-peel geometries. Peel rate: Higher peel rates increase peel force for viscoelastic adhesives due to rate-dependent energy dissipation. Temperature: Lower temperatures increase adhesive stiffness and peel force; higher temperatures reduce adhesive viscosity and peel resistance. Surface preparation: Substrate surface cleanliness, roughness, and treatment level directly govern adhesive wetting and adhesion quality.

Interpreting Failure Modes

Adhesive failure (interfacial): The adhesive separates cleanly from one surface — indicating poor adhesion at that interface. The cause is usually inadequate surface preparation, contamination, or surface energy mismatch. Cohesive failure: The adhesive splits internally, leaving adhesive on both surfaces — indicating that interfacial adhesion exceeds the adhesive’s internal strength. This is generally the preferred failure mode as it confirms the bond is stronger than the adhesive itself. Substrate failure: The flexible adherend tears rather than the adhesive debonding — the adhesive bond is stronger than the substrate.

Packaging laminate qualification: Adhesive laminate bond strength between film layers (OPA/PE, OPP/metPET, etc.) for flexible food packaging. Pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) characterisation: Peel adhesion of PSA tapes, labels, and protective films.
