ASTM A487 Steel Castings Suitable for Pressure Service

Scope:

The ASTM A487 applies to steel valve castings, flanges, fittings, and other pressure containing parts designed for use at low temperatures. They are more suitable for work at low temperatures.

Procedure:

In ASTM A487, all the castings must be heat treated according to their design and chemical makeup. In some instances, heating should be done before machining. After that steel shall conform to the chemical composition and tensile strength as required. The casting’s surface must be visually checked and free of adhering sand, scale, fractures, and hot tears.

Specimen size:

The specimen should be conditioned at a temperature of 25 LCB for + 25^o F [-4^o C] and 025 LCB for -25^oF [-32^oC].

Calculation:

The carbon equivalent can be determined by using the following equation:

Carbon equivalent = C + Mn  +   Cr + Mo + V   +    Ni + Cu

Conclusion:

By using ASTM A487, low-alloy steels, and stainless steels are normalized and tempered for use in pressure vessels.
