Ingress Protection Testing

IP code testing, also known as ingress protection testing, is an important type of enclosure testing used to determine the degree of protection against solids and liquids. The IP Code, or ingress protection level, is determined by international protection marking IP standards and is made up of two numbers between 0 and 6 and 0 and 9, respectively. Utilizing calibrated IP testing apparatus, it is possible to determine a product’s sensitivity to solid particle infiltration and dust, as well as its waterproofness and immersion protection.

For the dust test, a dust chamber is used, and the product is tested with dust or sand. RTCA-DO-160 Section 12.0 is a popular military standard for this. For waterproofness, the product can be tested with dripping water, water-spraying, or rain-driving. Additionally, immersion testing can be done, which involves submerging the product in water for a certain duration and depth. Cold water testing and ocean simulations are also possible.

In addition, products may be tested for solids and liquids separately, in which case the solids digit may be represented by a “x”, and they will still be given an IP rating. There are 70 different combinations of IP Codes, and they are all dependent on the two numbers and the testing done. For example, a product with an IP 67 rating can be immersed up to one metre and is protected from both solids and liquids. 

Overall, IP Code testing is a crucial type of enclosure testing that is done to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.
