Extrusion Molding

Extrusion molding is a manufacturing method that forms material within a predetermined framework to produce tubular shapes from various materials. It is used to create products like hoses, drinking straws, rods, and pipes.

Molding is a manufacturing method that involves forming material inside a predetermined framework, sometimes known as a pattern. This method is used in extrusion molding to produce tubular shapes from a wide range of materials.

Definition

Products including hoses, drinking straws, rods, and pipes are made via extrusion molding, in which material is extruded (or forced out) through a die. A press, or equipment that applies pressure to condense or otherwise mold an object, requires a die in order to shape or cut the material being worked with.

Process

An extruder is a machine used for extrusion molding. The plastic is heated while it is fed through a screw turned by the machine’s motor. The plastic granules are heated until they become a liquid, and then the liquid is forced through the die. The shape of the tube is governed by the shape of the die used to shape the material. After being cooled, the substance takes the form of a solid tube.

Blow Molding via Extrusion

When talking about the process of making hollow plastic things, the term “extrusion blow molding” is used. Before the plastic is melted down by the typical extrusion process, a hole is made in one end to allow compressed air to enter through it. The tube of hot plastic is then cooled by forcing air through it under pressure.
