Scope
The ASTM D5379 test method determines plastic material’s heart strain, shear stress, and shear modulus. This test procedure deals with the shear properties of composite materials reinforced by high-modulus fibers. The composite materials may be continuous-fiber or discontinuous-fiber-reinforced type composites. The information can be used for study and development purposes concerning interply strength or composite material contrast.
Test Procedure
A notched beam sample is mounted in a shear fixture for the ASTM D5379 test. Strain gauges can be applied to both sides of the sample. This ensures that shear and twisting do not occur, but failure must occur by shear. A load is applied at a particular rate until the sample breaks down.
Specimen Size
The test samples are 76 X 11 mm at composite thickness with a V notch above and below the 11 mm dimension.
Data
Shear Strain, Stress/Ultimate Strength, Ultimate Strain, and Shear Cord Modulus of elasticity.
