ASTM D7617/7617M-11 test method determines the properties of smooth round rods and textured bars by detecting their transverse shear strength. The use of rods and bars in concrete beams, concrete pavements, and wooden beams is studied. The final results of this test method are either expressed in SI units or inch-pound units.


    ASTM D7617/7617M-11 test method helps determine the transverse shear strength of polymer rods and bars. The results obtained are used for quality control, performance evaluation, research, material specification, quality assurance, development, and designing of various fiber-reinforced polymer products.  The method is applicable for the rods and bars with large diameters and is thus crucial in specifying their application.


    The fiber-reinforced polymer rod or bar is measured and placed into a double shear fixture. The shear fixture has cutting blades and is attached to a universal mechanical testing machine.  The specimen is placed in the bar seats, and the displacement is adjusted for the test machine. Uniform force is applied until the failure is reached. The failure force and the change in the specimen’s stiffness are noted.

    Specimen size:

    Smooth rods and textured bars with diameters ranging from 6 mm to 25 mm are used for the performance of this test.


    Transverse shear strength shall be calculated according to the following equation with  precision to three significant digits,

    TU= Ps/2A

    Where: TU= transverse shear strength, MPa [psi]
    Ps = maximum failure force, N [lbf]
    A = cross-sectional area of specimen, mm2
