Scope:
The short beam shear test by ASTM D2344 is used to determine the interlaminar shear strength of parallel fibres. This test is helpful for different types of parallel fibre-reinforced plastics as well as composites. The data obtained is useful regarding interply strength and can also be used for the comparison of composite materials. The ASTM D2344 test has certain limitations as it can be used for only continuous or discontinuous fibre-reinforced polymer composites.
Test Procedure:
For the ASTM D2344 test initially, the width and thickness of the test sample are determined before conditioning for the test. The samples are placed on a horizontal shear test fixture where fibres are parallel to the loading nose. Then, the loading nose is used to flex the sample at a pace of 50 cm/min. After that, the force is recorded. Finally, shear strength calculations are carried out.

The test samples are machined from flat, finished composites and then used.
