Guided Bend Test for Ductility of Welds

Welding is a widely used technique for joining metals in various industries such as construction, manufacturing, and transportation. The Guided Bend Test is an important method for evaluating the quality of welds and ensuring that welded joints are strong, durable, and safe for their intended application. It involves bending a sample of the weld around a predetermined radius using a bending machine or jig. The sample is guided through the bend to ensure that the deformation is uniform and controlled. After the bending process, the sample is examined for any signs of cracking or other defects, such as porosity or lack of fusion.

The Guided Bend Test is often used in conjunction with other non-destructive tests such as radiography and ultrasonic testing to ensure the quality of welded joints. It is also used for qualification testing of welding procedures and welders to ensure that they meet the required standards and specifications.

The Guided Bend Test is commonly used in the welding industry to ensure that welded joints have the required strength and can withstand the applied stresses without failure. It is typically specified in welding codes and standards, such as the American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1 Structural Welding Code. The quality of the weld is critical for the performance and safety of the final product. A welded joint that is weak or defective can fail under stress, leading to catastrophic consequences.
