Flexural Strength of Advanced Ceramics at Ambient Temperature ASTM C1161

ASTM C1161 is a testing standard that calculates the flexural strength of advanced ceramic materials at ambient temperature. This test method is helpful in evaluating monolithic or particulate- or whisker-reinforced ceramics. The strength of every sample is reported in megapascals (pounds per square inch) up to three significant figures.

    Scope:

    ASTM C1161 is a testing standard that calculates the flexural strength of advanced ceramic materials at ambient temperature. Flexural strength is defined as a  measure of the ultimate strength of a specified beam toward bending. This test method is useful for monolithic or particulate- or whisker-reinforced ceramics, but it is not useful for continuous fiber-reinforced ceramic composites.

    Test Procedure:

    The test sample is prepared as stated by ASTM C1161 standard. The sample is mounted in the flex fixture below the axis of the applied load, ensuring an equal amount of overhang beyond the outer bearings. Then, the load is applied at right angles to the fixture till the sample breaks, and the braking force is noted. Crosshead speeds for various testing configurations are stated by the standard. The sample is marked at the points of load to differentiate between tensile and compression forces. These marks help in post-fracture analysis.
