A material’s density and specific gravity are two essential qualities crucial to many different industries, from petroleum to pharmaceuticals. They are vital for research and development, quality control, and material characterization.
A substance’s density is defined as its mass in relation to its volume. Common units of measurement for this mass per unit volume are kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m3) and grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3).
In other words, it’s the ratio of a substance’s mass to a reference substance’s mass for the same volume. Specific gravity (SG) is the ratio of a substance’s density to that of a reference substance. Water at 4°C is typically used as the reference substance for liquids since it has a 1 g/cm3 density or 1,000 kg/m3.
Density-Specific Gravity Testing services include hydrometer methods, pycnometer methods, digital density meters, Archimedes’ principle, gas pycnometers, and ultrasonic testing. Hydrometers measure specific gravity by sinking a liquid, while pycnometers measure specific gravity by filling a glassware with the test substance and comparing it with a reference substance. Digital density meters provide accurate results based on the oscillation tube principle. The difference in weights due to buoyant force is used for irregular solids. Gas pycnometers determine powder density. When choosing a testing service, consider accreditation, expertise, equipment, report details, turnaround time, cost, and client feedback to ensure reliability and quality.
IMR determines a polymer’s specific gravity/density by weighing it in a controlled environment and immersed in water. Composite materials’ specific gravity is the same as their production counterparts. The mechanical department offers testing services like impact, tensile, and thermo-mechanical analysis.
