Test Method for Geotextile Deterioration as per ASTM D4355
ASTM D4355 is a common test procedure for the degradation of geotextiles caused by exposure to light, moisture, and heat in a xenon arc-type apparatus. The procedure involves subjecting the samples to heat, moisture, and xenon arc radiation (end-use conditions) to alter their properties.
In reality, when subjected to these kinds of conditions, polymers’ mechanical, electrical, and optical characteristics can change dramatically. This technique’s exposure isn’t designed to mimic the degradation caused by regional climatic conditions, such as air pollution, biological assaults, and exposure to seawater. The specimens are put through a cut or ravel strip tensile test after each exposure interval to create a degradation curve. The latter enables the user to ascertain a geotextile material’s propensity to degrade when exposed to various elements such as heat, water, and sunlight.
