Shear test refers to the determination of the shear strength of the cylindrical products. Shear and bending stress always work side by side by loading the beam. Shear stress has a negligible impact compared to bending stress, nevertheless. However, shear stress holds maximum importance as it causes an object to break down.

Two blades with transverse holes in the middle make up a single shear test fixture. The fastener is sheared by moving the second blade in a parallel plane while keeping the first blade fixed and the pin in place. In double shear testing, the shearing blade is supported by a second stationary blade. The test is known as the double shear test, as the sample is subjected to loads from both sides during the test until it breaks apart.

Common Uses of Double Shear Test

  • It is used to determine the shear strength of mild steel.
  • It is used to demonstrate the shear strength of cylindrical materials.
  • It is used to determine the mechanical properties of composite laminates.

Advantages of Double Shear Test

  • A small amount of sample is required for testing thereby saving material.
  • As two planes are present in the double shear test, more shear force is applied and hence the test is more robust than single shear.

Limitations of Double Shear Test

  • The double shear test affects the mechanical properties of the bonding surface with the place.
  • The standard for the test is different for each material, thus affecting the deformation and loading of material.

Industrial Applications of Double Shear Test
