Scope
The ASTM D2369 test method is carried out to calculate the weight percent volatile content of solvent-borne and waterborne coatings, under specified conditions. The results produced by this procedure are useful to paint producers and users and to environmental interests for determining the volatiles emitted by coatings.
Test Procedure
A sample specimen of the liquid coating is taken, with quantities according to the ASTM D3925. Then the aluminum foil dish is weighed and recorded (W₁) to the nearest 0.1 mg. An appropriate amount and type (either solvent-borne or waterborne) of the specimen are added to the aluminum foil dish. The coating of the specimen is drawn into the syringe and weighed (Sₐ)to the nearest 0.1 mg. A duplicate sample is prepared and the aluminum foil dish containing the specimen is heated for 60 min at 110 +/- 5 °C, in a forced draft oven. After that, the dish is removed from the oven and placed in a desiccator, cooled to the ambient temperature, weighed (W₂) to the nearest 0.1 mg, and finally the weight is recorded.
Calculation
The percent volatile matter, V, is calculated as below:
Vₐ=100-[((W₂-W₁)/Sₐ)×100]
where:
Vₐ= % volatiles (first determination),
W₁= weight of the dish,
W₂= weight of dish plus specimen after heating,
Sₐ= specimen weight,
Vь= % volatiles (duplicate determination, calculated in same manner as Vₐ
V=(Vₐ+Vь)/2
And, the non-volatile matter (N) is calculated a difference below,
N = 100 – V
Result
All the values stated in the standard procedure of ASTM D2369 are reported in SI units. The weight percent solids content i.e. non-volatile matter is determined and reported, which is, in turn, useful for determining the volatiles emitted by coatings.
Conclusion
ASTM D2369 is an essential test method in the coatings industry for assessing the performance and environmental impact of coatings. It provides valuable information on the volatile content of coatings and helps manufacturers produce high-quality, environmentally friendly coatings.
