Scope:
ASTM D4541 test is used for determining the pull-off strength of a coating from a metal substrate. It is a significant performance property of a coating that is useful for preparing the coating specifications. The test is applicable for air barriers, vapor barriers, and other coatings. This method tests the pull-of strength of coatings on substrates like plastics. This test can also be used as a complementary procedure to an accelerated aging test to evaluate the evolution of property over time.
Test Procedure:
A 4 inch bond disk is applied to an air barrier for the ASTM D4541 test. Then, the membrane is scored down to the metal surface. The adhesion tester is fixed to the bond disc and pulled until adhesion failure. Generally, the rate of pull is 1 MPa/s (150 psi/s) or less and the time period is normally less than 100 seconds with the selected rate. The maximum force attained at the failure mode and adhesion failure are noted.
Sample size:
The required number of samples for the test is three. Other parameters for the sample are kept as specified by ASTM D4541.
Data:
Calibration chart or relative stress
Conclusion:
ASTM D4541 test is used for determining the pull-off strength of a coating from a metal substrate.
