Scope:
Finding the density of glass by ASTM C693 is essential as it provides information about its mass and volume. Density data provide information about the purity of raw materials of glass and is different for various composites. It has several applications in development, construction, research, and production.
Test Procedure:
In ASTM C693, the mass of the given glass sample is measured on an electric balance, and the reading is recorded. The same sample is weighed two more times to reduce the experimental error as the average of the three values is taken as the mass value. To measure the volume of the given glass sample, it is carefully immersed in a solution/water, and the increase in the volume of the solution is noted. The initial volume is subtracted from the final volume, and the reading is used as the value of the glass volume.
Specimen Size :
As per ASTM C693, the sample size can vary from mg to kg.
Data:
The formula to measure the density of glass;
ρ=m/V, where
ρ – Density of glass
m – MassV – Volume
Conclusion:
The standard test method ASTM C693 measures the density of glass. Measuring the thickness of the glass is very important as any change in the density can lead to undesired results.
