Scope:
There are three test methods in ASTM A1084 used for detecting the presence of detrimental phases in Lean Duplex Stainless Steels – The Etch method, the Charpy V-notch Impact Test, and the Inhibited Ferric Chloride Corrosion Test. These test methods are essential to reveal the presence or absence of a detrimental phase to the point where the material’s typical toughness and corrosion resistance are severely impaired.
Test Procedure:
| Test methods in ASTM A1084 | Section |
| Test method A | 6.1,6.2 |
| Test method B | 7.1-12.4 |
| Test method C | 13.1-19.5 |
Result
Based on the recorded corrosion rate in comparison to the established acceptance criteria, the ASTM A1084 test result is reported as passed or failed.
Conclusion:
The goal of test method ASTM A1084 is to determine the existence of harmful chromium-containing phases in selected lean duplex stainless steels that substantially impact toughness or corrosion resistance.
